July 2001 Otago MR2 Drive

(thanks to Harold & Kay, and Alan Craig for the photos)

About 11 MR2 cars and crews (welcome to the 2 new cars and crews - Fraser & Vicki and Harold & Kay) and 1 Mitsubishi Galant (a Bitchymissus!) met at the Slak-n-Slave car park 10:30am Sunday 29th of July. Those who had their new 'Otago MR2 Club' polo shirts were proudly wearing them - unfortunately they were all under jerseys due to the cold weather! Three of the cars couldn't make it on the drive but showed up to farewell the rest of us. We departed about 10:55 for Oamaru - good effort for the Dunedin members! We went around the back road from Goodwood to Palmerston. A nice hoon road with plenty of twists and turns - good fun!

A stop at Palmerston to relieve boiler pressure - for those of us who had too much coffee at breakfast time (or the older members affected by the cool weather!). We were met there by Colin Cross from Oamaru who was to lead us into the 'Whitestone City'.

Just north of 'Mr Surveryor Thompson's historic bridge' at Waianakarua, we hung a right and followed around the beautiful North Otago Coastal Drive, finishing up by the old North Otago Port at Oamaru. There was a lovely view looking north over Oamaru from South Hill. The weather here was cold and overcast, although Colin assured us it was sunny and warn when he left for Palmerston!?!

We proceeded to the old town precinct which 20 years ago was derelict. Beautiful old 19th Century Limestone buildings originally woolstores, grainstores etc. Some of these have been renovated and turned into restaurants, bars, market places, museum etc.

A good extended lunch and a look around the car museum to follow. Beaut replica 'C' type Jaguar in British Racing Green, made by Tempero replica's and restoration of Oamaru, a 1939 Buick Straight 8, an Anglebox (Anglia 105E), Morris's Austin Holden and a few old British Motorcycles - very good!

The ladies had a good look around the markets, even found 'Thomas Crapper' Lane with the loo's at the end, in one of the markets!!!!

We returned to Dunedin singly. Although being a little windy, it was a great day out!
